New tyre time! Fitting some Kenda RT tyres to the Fortuner
After 75,000kms my old tyres were done - wanted something a tad more aggressive than last time. Picked up a set of Kenda RTs to try out and so far I'm super happy with them.

    I was looking at these, only thing that put me off was they had no 3PMSF rating and a few bad reviews on the wet. I went with your old tyre the Maxis Razr At on a 35" though. Oh and I also went with the ballistic rims, great choice. And a FYI they are called Kenda Klever "smart " not klever " like the knife " 😂

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV 6 днів тому

      I’ve (so far) found them just as good as the RAZR in the wet - but we’ll see how they age, I don’t expect them to stay as good their whole lives with the more aggressive tread. Understand that if you need the snow rating there are other options though - makes sense! They’re mint rims eh - still really like them after almost four years of running them

      That’s part of the... charm… to me. It’s not a Japanese 4WD - but I quite like that about it Even if I spend half the time fixing weird not-Japanese-4WD-issues Or maybe I’m just mad 😅

      Heya - they fit without a lift (lift doesn’t help fit bigger tyres on a IFS vehicle) - did 10,000kms no issues on factory suspension - just had to remove the front mud flaps (and still can’t run them with the lift) Wheels are a 17x9 +15 - awesome fitment on a Fortuner

      I spotted that they had one of those - it looks good. I ended up putting a mattress topper in this one before we did three weeks down south, worked super well, was far more comfortable. I’ve heard really mixed things about the BFG - know a few people who didn’t rate them in the wet. Obviously depends a lot on the car and driver though. I wanted something a touch more than a standard AT this time - it’s a hard balance though, won’t deny that

      They were indeed, LT rated 10ply etc. Same size too. They use a tad more fuel which isn’t surprising - they’re heavier and have a more aggressive tread pattern - just one of those trade offs

    Ive been through there a couple of times and am heading back into the Big River track this weekend. Waiuta itself (at the top end of the track) is a fascinating place with the main mine shaft being over 950 metres deep. The reason the mining died in there was the main mine shaft at Waiuta collapsed one night back in its hey day and that was pretty much the end of the gold mine. They sunk a second shaft but it didn't yeild enough gold as it wasn't near the original quartz seam. Interestingly enough there are now a couple of massive new mines opening up in the area because the amount of known gold remaining is worth in the billions of dollars.

      Cheers! So good to get it out and about. They’re cheap 2.5” ones from Aliexpress. They’re… ok. Very cheap, but have lasted a few months so far - will see how they go. I do like how they look, was hard to find small ones

      @OverlandNZTV I reckon! Ok cool thanks for that. I have been looking for something just like this for my D3, without much luck. Will take a look on Aliexpress. Cheers!

    Should I get Rear lockers or front lockers first?

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV 2 місяці тому

      In all honestly, I've never had a locker till I got this 4WD. And even then, I hardly use it. From talking to people though, most seem to recommend a rear first - was my plan with my old Hilux before I decided to sell it

    I've got a question for you - Your Fortuner will still be under factory warranty and you will be getting the half price dealer servicing every 15,000 kms. How do these mods affect that? Do they tell you your warranty is void because you've modified the vehicle?

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV 2 місяці тому

      It depends on what happens given how modified the car is. If a shock or spring fails, they're not going to cover it obviously - I have to take that up with the supplier of them. But if say my gearbox dies, they'll cover that (they've already done some minor warranty work on it for me around the 20,000km mark ~18 months ago). I've since removed the catch can for other reasons, but it's possibly a greyer area when it comes to engine issues - though as long as it's installed properly, they shouldn't be able to knock back a claim - Toyota offer to install them. Timing chains are a known issue on this motor, if mine has issues Toyota will be fixing it - no way any of the mods can cause that issue. Hope that helps!

    Ordered a set of Method 0 offset wheels, how do you think they'll fit with a 265/70/17 tire??

    • @OverlandNZTV
      @OverlandNZTV 2 місяці тому

      Not sure sorry - haven’t ever tried a 0 offset on a Fortuner. My guess is you’ll need to do some trimming of the inside of the bumper and remove the front mud flaps - ran a 0 offset on my old Hilux and had to trim a few little bits Mine are a 17x9 +15, had to remove the front mudflaps to get them to clear

    The Disco takes its air from 3 slots on the lhs between the wing and door. Was designed that way to reduce dust intake. There should be a small plastic elbow pointing backwards between the inner and outer wing that feeds the airbox. Spend the money on sound deadening mats. They will also keep it a little cooler. I love these old Discos and actually teach 4x4 in one here in the UK. For reasonable offroading they are almost a cheat code. I spent quite some time recently driving/teaching in new Hilux, Ranger and Isuzu pickups. While they are good, once the track gets a bit more iffy they are harder work than the Disco floating along. Definitely can feel the pain from hard anti-roll (sway) bars in the modern stuff. Rough track feels like being punched in the shoulder all the time 😂
